Fall 2015

As we near the winter holidays, I'm working to increase my inventory prior to the "rush."

Today I listed this: "Sterling Silver Key and Vintage Coro 4 Picture Locket Necklace"

This awesome necklace is made with a vintage silver-plated Coro four picture locket. The locket opens to hold four photos (three under metal frames and one with tape). All photos can easily be removed on replaced with your treasures. I hung this locket on a sterling-silver ball chain that I hand-oxidized. The clasp on this chain is super-tiny which is why I made the chain long enough to slip on and off. Along with the locket, I hung a sterling-silver cast "master key" which reads "EAGLE LOCK CO. 178". I love how all the silvers meld.

This chain measures approximately 30 inches but can be easily shortened upon request at check-out. The locket hangs approximately 1 inch from the chain and the photo portion of the locket is approximately 3/4 inch in diameter.

I'm also working on new charm bracelets and a couple custom orders...stay tuned!

New Kitchen Bench

Now that spring has begun to sprung, I have started refinishing furniture again which is sooo satisfying.  We needed more seating at our kitchen table for when the in-laws and friends are over.  The bench lives on the opposite side of the table but I moved it around for photography's-sake.

My first idea was to add another leaf to the table but considering this table was discontinued years ago, that idea was a bust (it took me months to realize this idea was not going to happen but we won't go through that right now).  I then went through trying to find 6 smaller side chairs to make the total seating at this table 8, but that was just too hard, everything I found (mostly on Craigslist), needed to be repainted and that was turning into too much of a time and money commitment.

My final (and best) idea was to put a bench on one side of the table which could seat at least 4 people.  I needed a bench that was 60 inches long and I wanted it to match my existing table and chairs.  I searched for days until I finally found this one on Wayfair.

The bench is unfinished, which I wanted and the style very closely mimics the style of my existing table.  Also, I have always been super-thrilled with Wayfair's prices and customer service so it was a win-win-win situation!

I ordered the bench and in the couple days before it arrived I thought about how I wanted to finish it.  I love how the butcher block top is the same as my table but I didn't want the "country" look of a stained surface.  I decided I would copy the antiqued white finish of the chair.

When the bench arrived, the legs needed to be attached, an easy process.  As it was unfinished, it didn't really require any prep before painting.

I collected my supplies and got started painting.

I painted it with one coat of a white Sherwin-Williams furniture paint with no tint added. I rolled the top and painted the legs with a brush.

I let the one coat dry and then sanded the edges and sides to make it look older and also to hide the wear it will inevitably incur over time.

I then dusted the bench off and made a mixture of two parts glaze to one part wood stain.

I used Valspar signature glaze, which I stocked-up on as it is now discontinued (but you can use any furniture glaze) and Minwax stain in "Dark Walnut" which doesn't have an orange tint to it, which I like.  The glaze is water-based and the stain is oil-based but they DO mix together for the purposes of an antiqued stain.  I mixed them in a red Solo cup with a chopstick, eying the amounts until it looked like the color I wanted.  I then brushed it on with an old paint brush (the paint brush won't survive after this job) and wiped it off with an old rag before it dried.

It's hard to see but the result is a subtle antiqued look.  To make it look more aged, you can distress it more and leave the stain/glaze solution on longer.  I wanted a lightly distressed/aged look.  I then sealed the top with two coats of the glaze.

It matches perfectly, it is super functional and best of all, Kleist approves!

Happy Veteran's Day

Happy Veteran's Day to all those past, present and future who have and will have served our military.  To quote Mark Twain "In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot."

To celebrate Veteran's Day, I trash-picked a beautiful metal milk jug, originally from "Supplee" dairy in Philadelphia.  This beautiful red "chippy" piece has an eagle with outstretched wings...nothing says American more than Philadelphia, veterans, eagles and milk :)

Thanks again to all who have served!

Love and Luck 4 Picture Locket Necklace in Silver

A few years ago, I bought some vintage never-used silver lockets from a closing jewelry store.  I loved their shine, their ability to hold four pictures, their heart design that morphed into a four-leaf clover when they were open, etc.

I hung these lockets from a sterling silver-heart link chain and the results are fabulous (if I do say so myself).  They have also been selling with frequency and since I only have a few lockets left, I thought I would share them here.

You can purchase these necklace here

Happy Monday!

I am a Caricature

The other day, my son decided to go into my closet and car put together an ensemble that resembles me.  This is what he came up with:

First of all, he put on this black and white dress which wasn't the first time he's put this specific dress on to be "me", I barely even wear this one but it must appeal to him so I've made a conscious decision to wear it more often.  He's carrying a tote bag that I've carried a handful of times, a leg warmer on right arm, one of my baby dresses on his head, covered with fishnet stockings because, who doesn't wear their fishnets on their head?  The funniest part (other than the bra he's wearing and the rest of the outfit) is that he took my business card and in a high-pitched voice said..."Follow me at basilthecat.com!"  He is too much sometimes.

Here's another goof who decided to wear a bike helmet to mow the lawn

These boys crack me up!

Look What I Made!

I am toying with the idea of adding repurposed vintage home accessories to my "Basil the Cat" line. I'm also trying to capture and share the process of (re)creating these pieces.  Here is my first thrift-store-piece-turned-home-accessory-treasure.

The backstory:
A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I went on a date.  One of the stops was our favorite local thrift store.  I saw this vintage wooden train planter almost immediately.  It was in three pieces, very distressed and need of some love.  I decided for $4.95 I had to bring it home and give it some love.  I knew I had made a good choice when a couple of the ladies at the thrift store stopped me to tell me they almost purchased it and what they would have done to it.

Here is a before picture (although I did paint the birdie prior to clicking the pic).

To me, it is a beautiful piece of folk art, even with the missing wheels and rough construction.  I love the proportion of the large bird to the small train, it makes me smile.  I decided to paint it red and my husband had the brilliant idea to put wide tape over the metal straps so the wood would show through on either side.

This was my first time using "Frog Tape" and I think it did a good job, I don't necessarily think it's better than the blue stuff but it worked just fine.

I purchased three small tubes of acrylic paint at A.C. Moore to paint the bird, the wheels, the smoke stack and the front of the train. The black and white bottles of "My Studio" were $0.59 each and the yellow bottle of "Apple Barrel" was a splurge at $0.99 but it was called "Canary Yellow" and I told myself that if I find a yellow called "Canary" I was going to buy it.  I must say, though, I think the cheaper stuff worked better, it seemed to cover in less coats.

My next decision was what to do with the missing engine wheels.  I thought about having someone make them for me but I was able to find some on the internet by searching "spoked wood toy wheels" and although I needed to drill the holes a little bigger and saw the pegs a little bit, I couldn't be happier with how they turned out and with shipping, they were about $7.50 for the pair.

I am so thrilled with the final product.  After everything was painted, I lightly sanded the piece around the edges. To one of the cargo cars I added vintage black and white bunny salt and pepper shakers that have spoked wheels and look like they are peeking out over the side.   To the back I added large and small pool balls that coordinate with some pool ball accessories I have in my dining room (and happen to be leftover from other projects).

Mourning Locket

A few weeks ago, I received a message from Rene'e whose friend's husband had recently passed away.  Rene'e wanted to buy a locket to seal his ashes in. I though the idea was lovely and she ended up purchasing this  beautiful vintage locket from my shop:

Eternal Love

After much patience and a USPS mishap (obviously the original locket was lost in the mail), Rene'e contacted me to show me this amazing piece she had created with this vintage locket.

I was (and still am) so blown away by the beauty, love and artistry of this piece. Rene'e took a wonderful vintage locket and customized it for her friend. This is truly the definition of "vintage repurposed". I asked Rene's if I could share this piece with you and she happily agreed...yay!

Way to go Rene'e, your friend is lucky to have you!

MTV's Awkward Butterfly Necklace

At the request of a friend, I created a butterfly necklace similar to the one Jenna wear's on MTV's Awkward.  I think it came out great.  It is a brass butterfly charm connected to a gold-filled chain with a gold-filled spring ring closure.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I have a necklace in my shop that has been flying off the proverbial shelves:

Apparently, it is very similar to the necklace worn by Emma Watson in "The Perks of Being a Wallflower."  A little over a year ago, this necklace was popular because as a similar one was worn by Dakota Fanning in "The Runaways."  I love when my customers contact me and clue me in (Thanks Ling and Corinne).

In other (much more important) news, my husband celebrated his birthday this past week.  Happy Birthday Rob!

Look What (He) Made

A couple of weeks ago I received a convo from a customer who wanted to purchase the charm from this necklace (without the loop):
He told me he wanted to add them to the middle of a pair of glasses a la "Charlie Sheen as Rick Vaughn in Major League."

Look how amazing they turned-out, totally hot!:
He tells me he has plans to create other pairs of glasses...he has definitely found his calling...and you heard it here first!

I Heart Minnesota

Over the past few days, I've gotten quite a few orders for my Teensy State Charm Necklaces from people in Minnesota.

This happens occasionally where I'll sell a run of a bunch of necklaces of a particular state.  Most recently, it was New Hampshire.  I didn't think too much of it, and then one of my buyers let me know that Falen, a new DJ on the Dave Ryan in the Morning show had received my necklace and had been plugging them online and on the radio...I'm so flattered and she is obviously very loved by her fans.  You can read about her here: http://daveryanshow.iheart.com/pages/falen.html

If you would like your own state necklace, you can purchase it here
