Tomato Hornworms

A few days ago, upon daily inspection of my tomato plants, I saw this uninvited guest:

After screeching and gagging, I ran to my computer to investigate.  I found out that this is the larvae of a tomato hornworm that has been parasitized with wasp eggs.  Basically, a wasp layed eggs on this moth larva, slowly destroying it. The wasps will kill the hornworms when they emerge from the cocoons and will seek out other hornworms to parasitize...pretty gross but pretty amazing!

The Sweetest Place on Earth

Hershey, PA

We spent our 4th of July Weekend at Hershey...it was soo much fun.  I wanted to share a few pics from our trip:
In the car, on our way, Charlie insisted upon wearing these "sunglasses"
Hershey's bar at check-in
5 minutes later, after RJ devoured his bar (did I mention it was 9pm???)
The most delicious Reese's EVER
The cute train passengers
The ski lift ride I was too scared to go on
RJ and his winnings
Me, The Boys and the "Meow" according to Charlie (in his defense, it does sounds like "Kitty Cat")
Outside ZooAmerica...I love this picture!
The Characters

We had such an amazing weekend, I hope to do it again soon!

You Get What You Pay For

A couple of weeks ago, Charlie ran to the dining room window, spotting a fire truck parked in our neighborhood...a highly unusual occurrence.  We took him outside to investigate. When we got up to the truck, two fireman came over, proud of their shiny vehicle.  When we asked them what was going on, they told us that they had received a grant to replace fire alarms in older homes.  They were going door-to-door to see if the folks in our neighborhood were interested.  About an hour later, they arrived at our home and asked if we were interested...we immediately said "Yes!"  They replaced all of our alarms (except one), with new alarms with a 10-year Lithium battery...we were beyond excited.
Flash-forward to the NEXT day when I'm preheating my oven to 450 degrees, readying it for a Boboli pizza (a new family favorite).
My kitchen fills with smoke (no, this picture is not blurry, it is smoke-filled), which is relatively common at such high temperatures in my oven, and instead of the usual screaming from the two closest alarms, all we hear is silence....

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

The BANE of My Existence

A few weeks ago, my husband bought me a beautiful new van:
It's the nicest car I've ever owned and after driving a 1999 Honda Accord until the day it died (the day before we got this car), it feels sooooo luxurious!

A couple of weeks ago, when my car was less than a week old, I was pulling out the way too narrow garage and I hit the side mirror on the post separating the two garage doors.  I saw the huge "scratch" and I freaked-out and was so mad at myself until I took it to the dealer where they told me that "No, it's not a scratch, it's paint that can be removed with Turtle Wax."  After visiting my friend and working the Turlte-Wax-Magic, my car was as good as new. I have a new obsession with Turtle Wax now, by the way.

After that incident, I told my husband that we "needed" one big garage door instead of two doors separated by a 12 inch WORTHLESS divider.  Well, as it turns out, that divider isn't worthless, it's actual supporting the garage (darn it!) and will be quite a costly venture to remove, re support the garage and add new doors.  Trying to cope with the seemingly impossible idea of a new garage door, I've been parking in the garage to get used to the cars dimensions and TRYING to get more comfortable with parking there.

Fast forward two days, to today.  After a wonderful morning at Jellybean Jungle where I took the boys and met-up with two of my girlfriends and their kids (Charlie screamed and ran away every time I took his pic),

RJ decided he wanted to practice riding his bike.  I had found this amazing little boy's bike in the trash on Wednesday, purchased some training wheels and a helmet and after some tweaking by my Father-in-law, the bike was good to go.   So, RJ and I go into the garage and I open up the trunk.  I know that I'm pulled forward enough to do this because my windshield is gently resting against the ball strung from the ceiling that Rob so kindly rigged for me.  The trunk opens-up with ease (admittedly, I cringed for a second when I wasn't quite sure it was going to make it).  RJ then asks if he can open up the garage.  I say "sure" without fully assessing the situation and before I know it, this long metal pole that is attached to the door is scraping across my trunk.

The entire trunk is scraped, including the license plate, license plate holder, bottom of the window and the windshield wiper. 8:00 Monday morning, my car has a visit to the plastic surgeon.  I hate my garage doors with passion.

Goodbye Preschool....

...Hello Kindergarten

On June 10, 2011, my son RJ will be graduating from Preschool.  I'm so proud, excited and a little bit (okay, a lotta bit)  nervous for him to leave the secure cocoon of his preschool and enter the big (sometimes scary) world of elementary school.
This year has been marked by reading fluency, kindness and empathy to his friends and especially his "baby", increased gross and fine motor skills (especially in soccer), emerging piano skills, an incredible understanding of the concepts of time, space and numbers (like zero) and through all these accomplishments, and many more, an unmatched obsession with all things "Mario"!
I'm looking forward to seeing what the 2011-2012 school year will bring...

Octapatillion - A Poem

After complaining to my husband for months that I need to be a more dedicated blogger, he offered to write a poem for any piece of jewelry I had created, which I could in turn, use as my blog post...brilliant!  So here goes:

Octapatillion
Your white reach
seems so subtle
Grasp my tackish heart
