Found Joy

Last night as my husband and I were attempting to leave a restaurant review on "Trip Advisor" (which, by the way, is super impossible and involves them trying gain access to all your personal information), we came across some old photos of the kids that were stored in the "Drafts" section of an e-mail account that I don't really use.  In an effort to not lose these precious pics, I wanted to share them here:
Little RJ and his candy airplane

Long-haired RJ lounging with Play-Doh in his fleece pjs

2 year-old Charlie in love

Little Charlie probably the first and last time he ever fell asleep in the car

Sweet Baby James in the brown pjs I loved with a tiny scratch below his eye

And here are the delicious fellas in a picture that typifies Summer 2014
This about sums it up

Summer, life, time.....please slow down......

Look What I Made!

I am toying with the idea of adding repurposed vintage home accessories to my "Basil the Cat" line. I'm also trying to capture and share the process of (re)creating these pieces.  Here is my first thrift-store-piece-turned-home-accessory-treasure.

The backstory:
A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I went on a date.  One of the stops was our favorite local thrift store.  I saw this vintage wooden train planter almost immediately.  It was in three pieces, very distressed and need of some love.  I decided for $4.95 I had to bring it home and give it some love.  I knew I had made a good choice when a couple of the ladies at the thrift store stopped me to tell me they almost purchased it and what they would have done to it.

Here is a before picture (although I did paint the birdie prior to clicking the pic).

To me, it is a beautiful piece of folk art, even with the missing wheels and rough construction.  I love the proportion of the large bird to the small train, it makes me smile.  I decided to paint it red and my husband had the brilliant idea to put wide tape over the metal straps so the wood would show through on either side.

This was my first time using "Frog Tape" and I think it did a good job, I don't necessarily think it's better than the blue stuff but it worked just fine.

I purchased three small tubes of acrylic paint at A.C. Moore to paint the bird, the wheels, the smoke stack and the front of the train. The black and white bottles of "My Studio" were $0.59 each and the yellow bottle of "Apple Barrel" was a splurge at $0.99 but it was called "Canary Yellow" and I told myself that if I find a yellow called "Canary" I was going to buy it.  I must say, though, I think the cheaper stuff worked better, it seemed to cover in less coats.

My next decision was what to do with the missing engine wheels.  I thought about having someone make them for me but I was able to find some on the internet by searching "spoked wood toy wheels" and although I needed to drill the holes a little bigger and saw the pegs a little bit, I couldn't be happier with how they turned out and with shipping, they were about $7.50 for the pair.

I am so thrilled with the final product.  After everything was painted, I lightly sanded the piece around the edges. To one of the cargo cars I added vintage black and white bunny salt and pepper shakers that have spoked wheels and look like they are peeking out over the side.   To the back I added large and small pool balls that coordinate with some pool ball accessories I have in my dining room (and happen to be leftover from other projects).

Old Barracks Museum Trenton, NJ

Basil the Cat is a part of NJ's history.  You can find my NJ state necklace in the Old Barracks Museum gift shop.

Brief history of the museum:

In 1758, during the French and Indian War, the Old Barracks was constructed by the colony of New Jersey to house British soldiers and was used as such until the war's end in 1766.

In December 1776, George Washington crossed the Delaware to escape the British army during the American Revolution. On Christmas night 1776, American troops under General Washington re-crossed the river north into New Jersey, winning a stunning victory over British and Hessian troops in Trenton. This success marked the turning point of the American Revolution.

From March 1777 until the treaty of Paris in 1783, the Barracks served as a military hospital, primarily engaged in the inoculation of Continental Army soldiers with smallpox during an army-wide effort that was likely the first, successful, mass-inoculation in Western history.
The building served as a variety of private residences and institutions, until in 1902 it was purchased by a small group of local women who became the Old Barracks Association and opened it as a museum in October 1903. In 1914, the building was given to the State of New Jersey to maintain its upkeep, supported by the Old Barracks Association and a unique combination of public, private and personal funding.

The Old Barracks is the last remaining British military barracks in North America.

Today, the Old Barracks serves as a destination for visitors from around the world as well as an educational center for Colonial and American history. Nearly 20,000 school children and thousands more people from all over the world visit the Old Barracks every year, making it one of the most visited sites in New Jersey and one of the most important historic sites in the United States. The Old Barracks staff provides guided tours and interpretations of American colonial life. The building offers a museum of 18th century artifacts and weapons, as well as a gift shop.

Mourning Locket

A few weeks ago, I received a message from Rene'e whose friend's husband had recently passed away.  Rene'e wanted to buy a locket to seal his ashes in. I though the idea was lovely and she ended up purchasing this  beautiful vintage locket from my shop:

Eternal Love

After much patience and a USPS mishap (obviously the original locket was lost in the mail), Rene'e contacted me to show me this amazing piece she had created with this vintage locket.

I was (and still am) so blown away by the beauty, love and artistry of this piece. Rene'e took a wonderful vintage locket and customized it for her friend. This is truly the definition of "vintage repurposed". I asked Rene's if I could share this piece with you and she happily agreed...yay!

Way to go Rene'e, your friend is lucky to have you!
